New measurement technology to further sensing capabilities
The research teams of Femius Koenderink and Lyuba Amitonova (ARCNL) investigated new optical detection strategies to efficiently measure perturbations at the nanometer scale. For their experiments they used metasurfaces, which are artificial surfaces configured with carefully shaped nanoparticles that interact with light. Inspiration for the project came from a collaboration of AMOLF, ARCNL and industry partner ASML, focused on finding new ways to monitor potential errors that might arise during computer chip fabrication. The researchers published their findings in the journal Nature Communications on December 10.
Start of METAPIC project building metasurface pixels
Together with collaborators, AMOLF group leader Femius Koenderink has received funding for the METAPIC project from the Photon Delta call of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
Sharp view of the smallest structures
NWO announced that twelve consortia can start research projects through the Perspectief program. A crucial factor in these projects is their societal and economic impact. One of these projects is the CHAIN consortium, with AMOLF group leader Femius Koenderink as co-applicant. In this consortium, researchers join forces to advance the semiconductor industry. The budget will support six junior researchers in total, including one at AMOLF in the Resonant Nanophotonics group.
AMOLF-ARCNL PhD collaboration brings to light new nanostructure metrology technique
The joint PhD program between AMOLF and ARCNL continues to prove its strength in combining fundamental physics with industrial relevance. Falco Bijloo’s research, recently published in ACS Nano, showcases the power of this partnership. This December, two such joint AMOLF-ARCNL PhD candidates will both defend their PhD theses on the same day, highlighting the close-knit collaboration between the two institutes and the fertile research environment it creates for young scientists.
Vibrant Metamaterials2025
The conference Metamaterials2025 brought together 400 researchers from around the world to share their results and vision. Metamaterials was held at Felix Meritis in Amsterdam from September 2 – 6.
