Ultrafast Spectroscopy
Group leader: Prof. dr. Huib Bakker
The goal of this group is the elucidation of the structure and dynamics of
complex hydrogen-bonded systems, in particular of (bio)molecular
systems involving liquid water. The research is carried out using advanced
femtosecond nonlinear and single-molecule spectroscopic techniques.

- Schematic picture of the autodissociation of water. The O-H stretch vibration of a water molecule gets excited by spontaneous thermal fluctuations. The strongly delocalized quantum character of this state leads to a transfer of a proton to the hydrogen-bonded partner molecule, which leads to the formation of an H3O+-OH- contact ion pair.
