Visiting professor Andrea Alù wins Alan T. Waterman Award
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has named Andrea Alù as the recipient of this year’s Alan T. Waterman Award. Professor Alù (University of Texas in Austin) is currently KNAW visiting professor at AMOLF’s Center for Nanophotonics.
Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellowship for antifreeze protein research
AMOLF postdoc Konrad Meister from the research group of Huib Bakker was honoured with a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship amounting 165 k€ for his proposal Hydration Dynamics of Antifreeze Proteins.
Vici grant for Femius Koenderink
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a Vici grant to AMOLF group leader Femius Koenderink. A total of 216 researchers submitted a pre-prososal. Out of 132 elaborated proposals, 36 researchers now receive a Vici grant of up to 1.500.000 euro.
Katja Taute wins award for outstanding talk
AMOLF postdoc Katja Taute (Systems Biology and Biophysics research groups) has won the award for outstanding postdoctoral talk at the BLAST XIII conference (13th International Conference on Bacterial Locomotion and Signal Transduction). The award included a cash prize of USD 500. The conference took place in Arizona, USA from January 19th till January 23rd, 2015.
Hugo Doeleman launched in Faces of Science
Last year Hugo Doeleman started at AMOLF as PhD student in the research group Resonant Nanophotonics.
Bruno Ehrler starts new research group on Hybrid Solar Cells
As of November 1st, Bruno Ehrler has been appointed as AMOLF group leader.
Martin van Hecke starts new research group on ‘Mechanical Metamaterials’
As of September 1, Martin van Hecke starts a new research group on Mechanical Metamaterials. These forms of matter derive their transnatural functionalities from their structure rather than composition — examples range from elastic media with carefully designed cavities to Origami. Main research themes are to explore programmable, active and intelligent metamaterials, as well as to discover their design rules (“the inverse problem”).
MRS 2014 Innovation in Materials Characterization Award for Albert Polman
AMOLF group leader Albert Polman receives the 2014 Innovation in Materials Characterization Award of the Materials Research Society (MRS) “for the development, application and commercialization of Angle-Resolved Cathodoluminescence Imaging Spectroscopy (ARCIS) as a new tool for optical imaging at the nanoscale, with applications in nanophotonics and materials science in general.”
