AMOLF receives grant from Sustainable Science Fund
How can we make research at AMOLF more sustainable? One answer to this question is to reduce the amount of liquid nitrogen used for performing experiments. Recently, AMOLF was awarded a grant of 48,760 euro from NWO and the Dutch Climate Research Initiative (KIN) to purchase equipment that will allow the institute to produce gaseous nitrogen in-house. As a result, AMOLF will purchase less liquid nitrogen, which requires a significant amount of energy to produce.
Vibrant ExpeditieNext
Each spring, AMOLF participates in ‘ExpeditieNext’, the national science festival for kids. This year, AMOLF expanded its contribution by offering two activities: ‘Make your own hologram’ and the newly developed ‘Flavor enhancers’. ‘ExpeditieNext’ 2026 took place in Enkhuizen on May 1.
OrganoidNL 2026 brings together Dutch organoid research community
On April 17, around 250 researchers gathered at AMOLF in Amsterdam for the fourth edition of the annual OrganoidNL Symposium. Organoids, which are small, simplified models of organs grown from stem cells in the lab, are powerful tools to study, for example, how our bodies work and how diseases develop.
ZonMW grant for immune system research
Together with fellow researcher Ramon Arens (LUMC), Kristina Ganzinger (AMOLF/Oncode Institute) has received a ZonMw Open Competition grant amounting 800 k€ for research on the immune system. Kristina explains: “By linking fundamental discoveries to practical applications, we hope that this research can contribute to more effective immunotherapies and improved survival outcomes for a larger number of patients.”
NWO XS grant awarded to Wiebke Albrecht
AMOLF group leader Wiebke Albrecht has been awarded an NWO XS grant for the project “Mapping nanoscale heat generation and dissipation around plasmonic nanoparticles.”
Full house for first Multistable Active Matter symposium
On April 16 and 17, AMOLF organized the first ‘Multistable Active Matter’ symposium. The initiative for this new symposium came from Martin van Hecke (Mechanical Metamaterials), with the aim of starting a discussion about a new direction in the field: the design and understanding of multistable active systems.
Princess of Orange visits AMOLF
On Thursday, 16 April, the Princess of Orange visited Amsterdam Science Park, including AMOLF. Princess Amalia, who has been studying at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), was in Amsterdam for an introductory visit at the invitation of Mayor Femke Halsema. The theme was Amsterdam Tech City, with a special focus on AI and sustainable solar energy. At Amsterdam Science Park, researchers, students and entrepreneurs work together on solutions to tomorrow’s societal challenges.
Celebrating 10 years of directorship Huib Bakker
After serving as director of AMOLF for 10 years, Huib Bakker stepped down on December 31. Last week, AMOLF celebrated his directorship with a special symposium.
