Ewold Verhagen appointed professor at Eindhoven University of Technology
On July 1st, Ewold Verhagen was appointed professor of Nano-optomechanics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). At TU/e Verhagen is part of the research group Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) within the department of Applied Physics. Verhagen will continue working at AMOLF as group leader of the Photonic Forces group. AMOLF and TU/e expect the appointment to further strengthen their research collaboration.
NWO Vidi grant awarded to Bruno Ehrler
AMOLF group leader Bruno Ehrler has been awarded with an NWO Vidi grant. The grant enables Ehrler to study a promising new material for solar cells. NWO has awarded a total of 89 experienced researchers a Vidi grant that is worth 800.000 euros.
Konrad Meister selected for 67th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting
AMOLF Postdoc Konrad Meister has been selected for the 67th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting that will be held from 25 until 30 June, 2017. Once every year, 30–40 Nobel Laureates come together in the German lakeside town of Lindau to meet the next generation of leading scientists. This year the meeting is dedicated to chemistry and 400 – 500 young scientists from all over the world were chosen to attend. Meister is looking forward to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and to discuss and mingle with the Nobel Lauretares and scientists on the picturesque island in Germany.

Cum laude defense Carien Groot
On January 13th Carien Groot successfully defended her PhD thesis Dynamics of water interacting with biomolecules at the University of Amsterdam. She obtained the cum laude degree for her doctorate research in the Ultrafast Spectroscopy group of Huib Bakker. This degree is reserved for the top 5% of students.
Cum laude defense Sander Mann
On December 6th Sander Mann successfully defended his PhD thesis Quantifying limits and losses in nanoscale photovoltaics at the University of Amsterdam. He obtained the cum laude degree for his doctorate research in the Nanoscale Solar Cells group led by Erik Garnett. This degree is reserved for the top 5% of students. Mann was Garnett’s first PhD student.
Albert Polman has been awarded the EPS QEOD Prize for Research into the Science of Light
AMOLF group leader Albert Polman has been elected as the winner of the 2017 Research into the Science of Light Prize of the Quantum Electronics and Optics Division (QEOD) of the European Physical Society (EPS). He is awarded the prize “for mastering light at the nanoscale and for demonstrating novel applications in nanoscale optical circuits, photovoltaics, and super-resolution imaging”. The prize will be awarded at the forthcoming 6th International Topical Meeting on Nanophotonics and Metamaterials (Nanometa) to be held in Seefeld, Austria in January 2017.
Albert Polman elected as OSA Fellow
The Optical Society (OSA) has elected AMOLF group leader Albert Polman as Fellow of the OSA. The OSA elected Polman for “novel fundamental insights in the behavior of light at the nanoscale, leading to improved light management strategies in solar cells and the development of deep-subwavelength cathodoluminescence microscopy.” OSA Fellowships are awarded to “recognize members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics”. Candidates for Fellow Membership are nominated by current OSA Fellow members.
