Bas Overvelde in radio broadcast on: how soft robots can save lives
What do a ketchup bottle and balloons have to do with robots? That was the opening question of an NPO Radio 1 broadcast in which Bas Overvelde, leader of AMOLF’s Soft Robotic Matter Group, appeared. Bas was interviewed in ‘De Nacht van NTR Wetenschap’ to discuss the life-saving potential of soft robots. These flexible robots, made from soft materials, can adapt to their environment and respond to touch. While they’re gentle enough to pick fruit without damage, their potential goes far beyond: by mimicking the human heart, researchers aim to develop a hybrid robotic heart, offering hope for heart failure patients awaiting transplants.
AMOLF celebrates 75 years of magical times with network members
On November 12, AMOLF celebrated its 75th anniversary with its network partners at the iconic Felix Meritis in Amsterdam. The celebration drew together a diverse crowd of research collaborators, industry partners, policymakers, AMOLF staff and other esteemed relations. This gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the institute’s achievements, and exchange ideas about its evolving role in the future of science and technology.

On Monday 4 November, AMOLF researcher Wim Noorduin participated in the NWO debate “Science Works! The future of research and innovation in the Netherlands” in Nieuwspoort, The Hague.

OrganoidNL 2024: Latest advances in organoid research
On April 12th, the second edition of the OrganoidNL Conference was held at AMOLF. This one-day event united over 160 researchers from the Netherlands and neighboring countries, all passionate about organoid technology and biology.
OrganoidNL 2023: A successful showcase of organoid research in the Netherlands
On March 31st, 2023, the first OrganoidNL Symposium was organized at the AMOLF institute in Amsterdam. This one-day event brought together researchers from across the Netherlands with an interest in embryo-like structures and organoid technology and biology. With this symposium, the organizers aimed to further galvanize the already strong organoid research in the Netherlands by providing a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Soft Robots at Teknowlogy 2022
The Soft Robotic Matter research group led by Bas Overvelde will be present at Teknowlogy 2022: the Dutch festival where technology, science, innovation and valorization meet. At the event, visitors will be able to meet the latest soft robots that are controlled by fluidics, and soft robots that manage to carefully pick up differently shaped objects. Traditionally robots use electronics for their control, but the Soft Robotic Matter group mainly uses fluidic pressure to empower their robots.
AMOLF 70th year anniversary
This year September 15th is a special day for AMOLF. On this day exactly 70 years ago the Netherlands established AMOLF as a new research institute. At the time the task of the institute, which was called FOM Laboratory for Mass Spectrography, focused on finding out how to separate uranium isotopes. The research concentrated on the construction of a large electromagnetic isotope separator. The first sample (10 mg) of enriched 235U was made in 1953. In 1955 as a result of the Dutch developments, the American Congress decided to ‘declassify’ electromagnetic uranium separation technology.
