AMOLF and Delft University of Technology join forces to develop revolutionary microscopy technology

A joint research project between AMOLF, Delft University of Technology, Delmic and Technolution has received funding from the National Growth Fund program ‘NXTGEN Hightech.’ This project, which aims to push the boundaries of microscopy technology, is poised to create innovative tools for semiconductor and life sciences applications. We spoke with group leader Albert Polman and researcher Magda Solà Garcia of AMOLF’s Photonic Materials group, to learn more about this groundbreaking endeavor.

LMPV wins Team Science Award

The team of group leaders leading AMOLF’s Light Management in Photovoltaic Materials (LMPV) program has won the NWO Team Science Award 2023. With the award NWO rewards the most inspiring and successful team of researchers from various disciplinary fields, who jointly take on a scientific challenge in which their individual strengths and expertise demonstrably reinforce each other. The LMPV team will receive the prize money amounting 50.000 euro to be spend on team related activities.

Albert Polman appointed as Fellow of the Netherlands Academy of Engineering (NAE)

After being officially launched on May 22, the Netherlands Academy of Engineering (NAE) today announced that AMOLF group leader Albert Polman has been appointed as Fellow. With the appointment of in total 62 Fellows, the NAE is ready to start fulfilling its mission of stimulating innovation in the Netherlands by offering engineering based solutions for major societal challenges. Innovation is thus used to create societal and economic value. Polman feels very honored to be appointed in the new Netherlands Academy of Engineering. He says, “the foundation of the new academy reflects the value we give to engineering, complementary to scientific research, in order to make impact in the world.”

Efficiency of silicon-based multijunction solar cells breaks 36% barrier

A team of researchers of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Research (ISE, Freiburg) and AMOLF (Amsterdam) have fabricated a multijunction solar cell with an efficiency of 36.1%, the highest efficiency ever reached for a solar cell based on silicon. The team presented the new record at the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (PVSEC) in Lisbon on Thursday, September 21, 2023.

From fundamental solar cell research to production of solar panels: SolarNL project receives 412 million to realize its plans in the Netherlands

The Dutch government invests 312 million euro, plus a loan of 100 million euro, in a national program for large-scale production of solar cells and solar panels in the Netherlands. This was announced by Rianne Letschert, chair of the Advice Committee of the Dutch National Growth Fund, during a press conference on Friday, June 30th. AMOLF participates in SolarNL with research on new solar cell materials and technologies. Also, the SolarNL program office will be located at AMOLF.

SHINE consortium receives NWO funding to combine the best of two worlds

A consortium consisting of AMOLF and other academic partners in the Netherlands receives funding from the NWO Research Infrastructure (RI) call for the project ‘Shining light on atomic-scale processes’ (SHINE). AMOLF’s group leader Wiebke Albrecht (Hybrid Nanosystems) is the principal investigator. The total budget for the duration of the project is 3 million euros.

Research highlights

Mathematics at the speed of light

Researchers at AMOLF, University of Pennsylvania, and City University of New York (CUNY) created a nanostructured surface capable of solving equations using light. This discovery opens exciting new opportunities in the field of analog processing based on optical metasurfaces. AMOLF PhD student Andrea Cordaro and his co-authors publish their findings in Nature Nanotechnology on January 12th 2023.
