Title: Chemical Dynamics in Halide Perovskites as a Route to Device Healing and Memristive Systems

Abstract

Halide perovskites are widely recognized for their remarkable optoelectronic performance, but their most distinctive feature may be their chemically and ionically dynamic nature. Their soft lattices, low formation energies, and mobile ionic species make these materials fundamentally different from conventional semiconductors and are commonly linked to degradation, hysteresis, and performance variability. Yet the same properties can be understood and controlled to create new functionality.

Our approach considers that the intrinsic dynamic nature of halide perovskites can be exploited rather than simply mitigated. Under realistic stress conditions, these materials reveal reversible transformations and even spontaneous performance recovery, indicating that degradation is not always a one way process. Building on this understanding, we develop chemically assisted healing strategies that restore performance and extend operational lifetime in Sn-based perovskites.

The same ionic mobility that drives degradation and healing also gives rise to resistive switching in perovskite memristors, linking defect chemistry and ion migration directly to computing oriented device functionality. Because these materials evolve during operation, capturing these effects requires characterization tools that go beyond static descriptions of structure and performance. I will discuss operando approaches that combine impedance spectroscopy with luminescence analysis to decouple fast electronic processes from slower ionic and interfacial dynamics, quantify non-radiative losses, and identify the onset of reversible and irreversible degradation. Together, these results illustrate how embracing chemical dynamics can guide the design of more robust and functional halide perovskite devices.
