AMOLF PhD student receives Andries Miedema Prize 2010

January 12, 2010

The Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) has awarded Dr. Yves Rezus the Andries Miedema Prize 2010 for his PhD research (on which he graduated cum laude) into the ultrafast dynamics of water molecules.

Rezus studied the molecular rotations of water molecules using femtosecond mid-infrared spectroscopy. His experiments made it possible to observe the ice-like dynamics of water near hydrophobic molecules.

The Andries Miedema Prize is awarded every two years to the best PhD research in condensed matter physics. Rezus will receive his prize on January 19th during the Physics@FOM Veldhoven 2010 conference.

Yves Rezus (31) did his PhD research at AMOLF, in Prof. Huib Bakker’s Group Ultrafast Spectroscopy. His PhD thesis is entitled Snapshots of water: orientational dynamics of hydrogen-bonded systems.
