PhD-student Superresolution imaging of live cell signalling dynamics

Category: Systems Biology, PhD
March 30, 2012

In this project, we will develop and apply state-of-the-art superresolution optical imaging techniques to resolve mechanistic questions regarding signal processing within living cells at the single-molecule level.

Research / Job description
We have recently characterized the dynamics of the signalling network controlling the motility of bacteria by Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiments in live cells (PNAS 108:33870, 2011; Mol Syst Biol 6:382, 2010). While the signal transfer functions obtained by these ensemble-averaged measurements provide a useful coarse-grained description in considering functional aspects, many open questions remain on the underlying molecular mechanisms that are addressable at the single-molecule level. The project will benefit from our previous work on, and existing experimental setups for FRET microscopy, in addition to our newly built superresolution imaging setup.

About the group Physical Systems Biology

Required qualifications
We seek candidates with a strong background in experimental physics, with an interest in the biophysics of living cells. Applicants must meet the requirements for an MSc-degree. Terms of employment The position is intended as full-time (38 hrs / week, 12 months / year) appointment in the service of Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) for the duration of four years. After successful completion of the PhD research a PhD degree will be granted at one of the universities within the Netherlands. Several courses are offered, specially developed for PhD-students. AMOLF assists any new PhD-student with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.
