AMOLF's carries out research in two main directions: Physics of Biomolecular systems and Nanophotonics. The research is organized within three research Departments: Molecular Biophysics, Systems Biophysics and Nanophotonics that work closely together. AMOLF employs about 130 FTE research staff in 15 research groups and 70 FTE support staff.

AMOLF's research wouldn't be possible without a dedicated support staff. AMOLF offers its researchers expertise in different departments divided over Engineering (Mechanical Design Engineering, a fully equiped Mechanical Workshop, Electronics Engineering and Software Engineering), Facilities (ICT, Facility Management, Safety, Health & Environment, Maintenance & Customer Service and Purchase & Storehouse) and Administration (Finances, Communications, Library, Office & Reception desk and Personnel Affairs). Information about the support departments is only available through the intranet.
